Chapter 13

When the truth begins to come out and smiles like the summer sun

Ira’s head was spinning. Remy, beautiful Remy who his lion had longed to curl up beside from the moment he saw him, was being kind to him. It was a complete 180 from their last encounter and Ira had no idea of what to make of that or Remy begging him to help with this meal. He guessed the real test would come when he asked what was sure to be a stupid question.

“How do I dry the lettuce without leaving bits of paper all over it?”

Any minute now there would be laughter. Another declaration of how stupid he was. Maybe this time there would be a new, more inventive insult than the ones he’s been subjected to before.

Their gazes met when Remy turned his head away from the tomatoes he was slicing. “Lay four paper towels down on the counter, then lay four more on top of them. Lay the lettuce on top of that, and then four more paper towels on top of the lettuce and blot gently.”

Ira nodded and moved to do as Remy had asked. He kept one eye on the bacon too, so he could turn it when it started to get too crispy on one side. Soon, they had all the components for the sandwiches laid out in a neat assembly line and Misha joined them in the kitchen. His shoulders brushed against Remy’s as they moved around one another to get the sandwiches put together and served, making theirs last. Before he could join Pike at the table, Remy touched his arm.

“I’m sorry about what I said to you in the kitchen the other day,” Remy said, sad eyes framed by fringes of white-blonde hair. “I didn’t understand that it was wrong. I’m not sure how much I understand now, but I’m trying to learn. Where I’m from, my old man and my uncles talked to us that way all the time. I guess my siblings and I got into the habit of doing it too. I didn’t think anyone would get upset about it. I was just shocked they weren’t yelling at you about the food being wasted, ‘cause I’d have been in a whole heap of trouble if I had messed up dinner like that.”

For a moment, he couldn’t breathe. An apology was the last thing he imagined Remy would want to say. He certainly looked contrite.

“Thank you for your apology,” Ira said. “If there’s anything I can help you understand, you’re welcome to ask.”

“Thanks. Right now I’m still kinda lost.”

“Aren’t we all?" Misha muttered, staring down at his food.

“Are you being flippant or serious right now?” Pike asked.

Ira could hear a hint of annoyance in his tone. These days, it seems to always be there. He wished the lion would just come out and tell them all what the issue was.

“Serious.”

“Anyone else have anything else that needs discussing?” Pike asked.

Ira put his hand up cautiously and watched the other hands around the table rise up too.
